This article is an introductory chapter to a special issue of the Journal of Botanical Horticulure on the threats that plant pathogens pose to botanic gardens. In this article, co-authored with Dr. Katie Hayden at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, Scotland, places the risk of pathogens moving from wild plants to cultivated species in the broader context of what we know about he biodiversity and epidemiology of pathogensin natural plant populations.
